Learn How YOU Can Prevent Suicide.

  • Nationally recognized - The Connect Program is recognized as a comprehensive model for planning and implementing suicide prevention and postvention practices, as described in the Action Alliance Paper:  Key Elements for the Implementation of Comprehensive Community-Based Suicide Prevention
  • Public Health Approach - A public health, socio-ecological approach that looks at the individual, family, community and society. While a suicide is the act of an individual, it occurs in the context of and impacts that person’s relationships, community, and the larger society and culture.
  • More than "just training" - Connect helps you understand how systems work and how to collaborate across systems to create an integrated community response.

Course Summary

Day 1 provides participants with a complete experience of the Connect Suicide Prevention Training. Grounded in evidence-based research and a public health approach, the training explores risk and protective factors for suicide through the lens of the Social Ecological Model. Participants learn to recognize warning signs, engage in effective communication with individuals at risk, and apply practical strategies such as lethal means reduction, safe messaging, and crisis intervention.

The session includes interactive activities, facilitated discussion, and a case scenario to help participants apply key concepts. Local and national resources are reviewed to encourage help-seeking and support community response efforts.

Following completion of the full Connect Suicide Prevention Training on Day 1, participants who are becoming authorized trainers will spend Days 2 and 3 deepening their understanding of the Connect model and building the skills needed to deliver the curriculum effectively and with fidelity.
  • Understanding the Core Principles of the Connect approach, including the importance of using a public health lens and the socio-ecological model to address suicide prevention across systems.
  • Exploring the Training Structure and how the curriculum builds knowledge, shifts attitudes, and encourages skill development in a wide range of audiences.
  • Facilitation Skills Development, including presentation techniques, managing group dynamics, responding to difficult questions, and fostering inclusive, trauma-informed discussions.
  • Practice & Coaching, where participants engage in guided teach-backs of training content with real-time feedback from Connect staff and peers.
  • Adapting for Audiences: Learn how to tailor delivery while maintaining fidelity for various professions or communities, such as schools, healthcare, and social services.
  • Trainer Responsibilities & Resources, including licensing details, access to materials, ongoing support, and expectations for delivering Connect trainings during the two-year authorization period.

By the end of Day 3, participants will be better prepared to deliver Connect’s evidence-informed training confidently, consistently, and in a way that promotes meaningful dialogue and community-level impact.
